Maye Musk Scholarship

Completing a Coordinated Graduate Program in Dietetics at Wayne State University

“The Maye Musk Scholarship will make an incredible impact on my education and future goals. Not only will a large portion of school expenses be eliminated, but a weight will be lifted from my shoulders. A decreased financial burden will allow me to focus more energy on my classes and internship over the next two years. It will be easier to give every day of my coordinated program 100% effort.

How did you learn about the availability of the Foundation scholarship that you received?

I learned about the Maye Musk Scholarship through the EatRightFoundation.org scholarship webpage.

What motivated you to apply for a Foundation Scholarship?

The potential reward was my biggest motivator. I am not one to turn away any opportunities, especially when they have the possibility to be such a large reward.  I felt that with my GPA, volunteer activities, and writing abilities I stood a solid chance of receiving a scholarship. I also knew that even the smallest scholarship would benefit my education and take a weight off my shoulders.

How will the scholarship funds help support your continued success within your educational program?

This scholarship is decreasing my tuition expenses drastically for this school year. A decreased financial burden will mean I can be a bit more relaxed with how many hours I work at my part-time job each week. Which in turn means I will have more hours available to focus on my classes and prepare for the RD exam. Additionally, it will ensure that my energy levels are high during internship days since I won't be juggling working as many hours. I have good control of my work-life balance, but there are only so many hours in the day. Not having to work quite as much is a genuine blessing. As someone without any outside support financially this means everything to me.

What advice do you have for your colleagues about seeking out and applying for Foundation funding opportunities?

Apply to every single scholarship that you qualify for! Take advantage of any and all opportunities that get you closer to your goal, even if you have to devote a significant amount of time and energy to them. Personally, I feel that my variety of volunteering experiences, and strong letters of recommendation were a large contributor to being selected for this scholarship. Look for local opportunities near you that help your community, relate to food service, or research opportunities offered by your university. Local hospitals often have a wide variety of opportunities available to dietetics students as well! During your classes work to form strong bonds with my professors and program director. Forming a strong academic relationship will allow you to have multiple sources for letters of recommendation, from people who can speak on who you truly are as a student. For the Foundations scholarships push yourself to go above and beyond!
