2022 Alabama Dietetic Association Scholarship in Memorial of Audrey C. Wright, MS, RD

Completing a Doctoral Program at University of Alabama

“Receiving a Foundation Scholarship will help me to reach my goals of enhancing nutrition education for students, healthcare professionals, and the public. I'd like to do this by employing my training in a translational nutrition PhD program where I am be equipped to go from "bench to bedside". I see these three overarching groups as important recipients of up-to-date research and quality education in the classroom, the workforce, and the community. I hope to explore possibilities that will further catalyze the improvement and success of the field of dietetics.

How did you learn about the availability of the Foundation scholarship that you received?

I am constantly encouraged by the Faculty and Staff in my department to apply to these scholarships. Additionally, the Foundation does a great job of letting members know of the availability of these through blast emails and their website. Finally, my involvement in DPGs help me to stay connected and reminded of what the Foundation has to offer, including scholarships.

What motivated you to apply for a Foundation Scholarship?

My motivation comes from my determination to set and achieve high goals. I am proud of my accomplishments so far and that makes funding seem more achievable. If it is achievable, then locating and applying to funding seems easier. Likewise, as a recipient of a scholarship, I am affirmed of my hard work and grit. It could be considered a cyclical process; hard work encourages me to apply, and the award affirms my hard work.

How will the scholarship funds help support your continued success within your educational program?

Receiving this scholarship has allowed me to pay for fees and supplies needed to be successful in my program. It has also helped my piece of mind as a mother of three. By covering costs for my program, the scholarship allows me extra time to spend working on my degree (including classes, career development, and research) and provides some balance to my schedule.

What advice do you have for your colleagues about seeking out and applying for Foundation funding opportunities?

Applying for funding through the Foundation is simplified by clear instructions and definitions of the aid available. The applicant portal is another tool that aids in a concise application process. I would encourage my colleagues to look at criteria and apply to funding, even if you are not sure you would be awarded. I have experienced a lot of pride and satisfaction through the application process. This is then further enhanced when my application is chosen.

All applications and timelines for Foundation funding opportunities are made available electronically within the Foundation’s application portal.
