This webinar took place on October 24, 2024.
The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated companies' digital offerings by seven years. According to a 2020 survey of executives, this presents an exciting opportunity for food retailers to capitalize on e-commerce trends, including integration with telehealth, to expand access to nutrition care. The virtual food retail space provides a unique platform that enhances the ability of registered dietitian nutritionists (RDN) to directly improve public health and connect with consumers where they are making food purchasing and meal planning decisions. However, because these programs are so new, little data exists to demonstrate the value of programs to food retailers, the healthcare industry and insurance payers. Data is needed to demonstrate the value of these programs on healthcare costs and savings and use of RDNs in FAM programs to be better be able to fund and support future programs that ultimately lead to the population’s improved health.
In 2022, the speakers launched a feasibility study with a major food retailer to evaluate the impact of an RDN-led Food as Medicine e-commerce program on nutrition-related health outcomes of participants. This webinar will present the results of the feasibility study, changes in nutrition-related health outcomes, barriers and facilitators to implementing the program, and provide recommendations on next steps to implementing RDN-centric, scalable programs to produce a positive return on investment, including improving health outcomes.
Commercial support has been provided by an educational grant from the General Mills Bell Institute of Health and Nutrition.
