Our Foundation is Always Working to Develop the Next Generation of RDNs!

Students have always been an important focus for our Foundation. In fact, in 1944, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics received a donation from Dr. Elmer McCollum to provide financial support for a  student pursuing a career in dietetics that would help to eventually establish the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation. Through the generous support of our donors, we have become the world’s largest provider of dietetic scholarships at all levels of study. Over the last three years, the Foundation awarded more than $1,575,000 to 1,200 in scholarships to help build the workforce and support the future of our profession. These efforts include $100,000 each year through the Commission on Dietetics Registration Diversity Scholarship Fund and providing students with $100 stipends to offset their costs to attend FNCE®.

To ensure our Foundation has student input throughout the year, the Foundation’s Board of Directors includes a Student Member. This year, our student member is Samantha Rongstad, who is a senior in the Accelerated Bachelor’s/Master’s Coordinated Program in Dietetics at the University of North Dakota. Samantha has been very active within the Academy throughout her time as a student and we are looking forward her thoughtful insight and perspective.

Students also show their appreciation to our Foundation by organizing fundraisers on campus that support our scholarship and annual fund efforts. These creative events included themed bake sales by the Student Nutrition and Dietetics Association at Life University in Marietta, Ga., and a dinner gala and silent auction organized by the Student Nutrition Organization at San Diego State University.

I am proud of all the ways our Foundation works year-round to incorporate students as a priority and develop the next generation of nutrition and dietetic professionals. As someone who has worked closely with students as an educator and administrator in the field of dietetics throughout my career, I am encouraged that the future of our profession is in good hands. This year our Foundation received a record number of scholarship applications. As you can imagine, this is a particularly difficult and challenging year for students, their faculty and their families with the pandemic. As you ponder this, please consider donating today to help us meet this need.

Sincerely,
