In 2017, there was a great need for support for those who the endured the hurricanes in the Southeast and the wildfires and mudslides in the West and Northwest. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation (Foundation), through its Disaster Relief Funds, awarded over $105,000 in aid to support nearly 80 Academy members and other practitioners who have suffered losses in the most recent natural disasters.
The Foundation’s Disaster Relief Funds were established to support the personal and professional life-rebuilding efforts of Academy members and other nutrition and dietetics professionals who are devastated by natural disasters. The Foundation has two separate funds to support disaster victims. Over the last six months, these two funds have supported 77 credentialed food and nutrition practitioners:
- The Foundation’s Disaster Relief Fund has provided $98,100 in aid to support life rebuilding efforts to 77 individuals
- The Foundation’s Disaster Relief Continuing Education and Credentialing Fund, established by the Commission on Dietetics Registration (CDR), has provided $6,915 in aid to support professional rebuilding efforts to 23 individuals
The Foundation’s Disaster Relief Fund was established to support the personal and professional life-rebuilding efforts of Academy members and other dietetics professionals who have been affected by disasters. Through this fund, Academy members, non-member nutrition and dietetics professionals, and dietetics students with an immediate need who have been affected by disasters are eligible for up to $2,500 in aid. Additionally, disaster victims seeking financial aid for continuing education initiatives are eligible for up to $500 from a separate fund created by the Foundation and CDR.
The Foundation’s Disaster Relief Fund was supported by a $100,000 donation from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics as well as contributions from fellow Academy members.
“I’m so gratified to see the response from Academy members whose donations, large and small, are making such a difference in the lives of our colleagues affected by these disasters. By designating their gifts to our Disaster Relief Fund, they are helping provide relief to so many people,” said Foundation Chair, Marty Yadrick, MS, MBI, RDN, FAND.
The Foundation, through the generosity of its donors, supports Academy members and other nutrition and dietetics professionals throughout their education and careers with scholarships, awards, research grants, public nutrition education programs, and even times of their greatest needs with relief during a life-changing event through its Disaster Relief Fund. Make a donation today to support your Foundation!

Thank you so much for this gift. I had to relocate for a three month period and am still in the process of cleaning my home after this disaster now that I have returned. Thank you for the help the Academy has provided to aid in the repair and restoration process.
