Each March, the Academy provides you with tremendous resources to help you promote the importance of making informed food choices, developing sound eating habits and staying physically active. Let’s all be sure to Put Your Best Fork Forward this month. This is also a great time to highlight what our Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation does for you as a member and how you can benefit from what we have to offer.
Our Foundation was established in 1966 and is the only charitable organization devoted exclusively to promoting our profession, nutrition and dietetics. I urge you to learn more about what your Foundation can do for you and become an active participant in our charity. Our Foundation provides members with opportunities for education at all levels through scholarships and awards that promote a diverse workforce and funds essential research for the profession.
The Foundation also has vital programs for the public, such as Kids Eat Right and Future of Food. We can all get involved by utilizing the dynamic, free toolkits that include webinars, infographics and PowerPoint presentations with notes to deliver nutrition education in your communities.
One of my favorite days of National Nutrition Month is Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Day on March 8, when we take a moment to celebrate all the amazing work dietitians do every day, in so many different settings. RDN Day is a great way to recognize and thank someone who has made a difference in your career or has inspired you to grow as a professional through a tribute gift to our Foundation.
I think we all know someone who is working in our profession that is making a difference! An RDN that has inspired me recently is Academy member, scholarship and fellowship recipient Lauren Au, PhD, RDN, who is doing phenomenal research at the National Policy Institute (University of California, division of Agriculture and Natural Resources) to inform nutrition policies.
We work hard to provide all of our Foundation programs and resources that empower you as a professional in the workplace and your community. The Foundation depends on donations from Academy members to thrive. Let’s celebrate National Nutrition Month by giving back to our profession and even recognizing someone through a tribute gift. Please consider a donation today!
